POS weekly transactions hit SAR 10.7 bln: SAMA

A POS machine


The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 10.74 billion in the week ended March 19, from SAR 10.81 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.  

   

Data showed that 128.05 million transactions were processed in the week.  

  

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Most sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week, led by education sector, which fell by 47%. It was followed by health and gas stations sectors, declining of 7% each. 

On the other hand, hotels sector saw a 19% increase in POS transactions to SAR 304.4 million.

Consumer spending focused on the restaurants and cafes sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.58 billion, representing 15% of total sales, followed by the food and beverage  sector with SAR 1.54 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value, with nearly SAR 3.35 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.82 billion.
