POS weekly transactions hit SAR 9.3 bln: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 9.3 billion in the week ended May 14, from SAR 8.4 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

    

Data showed that 128.3 million transactions were processed in the week.  

  

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Education topped the rising sectors, with a 2,642% growth. It was followed by construction and building materials sector, with 186% growth, then electronic and electric appliances with 144%.

On the other hand, hotel sector saw the steepest decline by 38%, followed by clothing and footwear, and, restaurants and cafes sectors by 26% and 23%, respectively.

Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.43 billion, representing 15% of total sales, followed by the restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.4 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value, with nearly SAR 2.86 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.49 billion.
