POS weekly transactions reach SAR 10.8 bln: SAMA

A POS machine


The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 10.8 billion in the week ended Aug. 6, down from SAR 11.42 billion in the week before, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

Data showed that 145 million transactions were processed during the week.

POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATM and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Most sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions, except for the education and hotels sectors.

The jewelry sector fell by 20%, followed by the food and beverages sector at 9% and the transport sector at 8%.

Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector in the week at nearly SAR 1.62 billion, representing nearly 15% of total sales, followed by the restaurants and cafes sector at SAR 1.61 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in value terms with nearly SAR 3.2 billion, representing 30% of total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.69 billion.
