Saudi business sector reports SAR 4.08 trln operating revenue in 2021: GASTAT

Operating revenue of Saudi Arabia’s business sector increased 26% year-on-year (YoY) to SAR 4.08 trillion in 2021, according to data by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT).

These results reflected the recovery of the business sector from the multi-dimensional COVID-related repercussions on economic activities. This supported a rebound to exceed the pre-pandemic levels in 2019, while overcoming challenges faced in 2020.

Manufacturing industries were the top revenue-generating activities in 2021, recording SAR 1.10 trillion. Mining and quarrying followed with over SAR 909 billion, while wholesale and retail came next, as indicated below:

Employee compensations increased by 12% YoY to SAR 388.4 billion in 2021.


Manufacturing industries, wholesale and retail, and construction activities recorded the highest employee compensations, compared to other business segments, as follows:

The number of employees by business activity, as per GASTAT, reached 7.98 million by the end of 2021.

Construction activities dominated the largest number of workers at 26%, or 2.06 million. It was followed by wholesale and retail (1.8 million) and administrative support services.
