POS weekly transactions at SAR 10.1 bln: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 10.09 billion in the week ended May 20, compared to SAR 10.89 billion in the week before, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

Data showed that about 160.86 million transactions were processed during the week.

 POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATMs and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors reported negative performance, except for jewelry, which reported an increase of 0.1%.

Education was the worst performer, with a decline of 17%, followed by recreation and culture (10%), telecommunications (10%), and healthcare (9%).

During the week, consumer spending focused on restaurants and cafes at SAR 1.59 billion and food and beverages at nearly SAR 1.56 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions in terms of value with almost SAR 3.43 billion, or 34% of total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.47 billion, as indicated below:
