POS weekly transactions up to SAR 12.7 bln: SAMA

POS device


Point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 12.66 billion in the week ended Aug. 5, compared to SAR 11.92 billion in the week before, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

Data showed that about 183.65 million transactions were processed during the week. 

POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATMs and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed an increase in POS transactions during the week, except for the food and beverage sector, which fell by 3%.

The education sector topped the increases, up by 72%, followed by hotels and jewelry at 19% and 18%, respectively.

Consumer spending focused on the restaurants and cafes sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.91 billion, followed by food and beverages with SAR 1.90 billion.

Riyadh led the way in POS transaction value, accounting for nearly SAR 3.91 billion, or 31% of total sales. Jeddah came in second place with SAR 1.82 billion, as shown below:
