POS weekly transactions hit highest level: SAMA

Point-of-sale (POS) transactions in Saudi Arabia totaled approximately SAR 16.21 billion for the week ended March 2, compared to SAR 12.14 billion in the previous week. This is the highest figure since the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) began issuing its POS report in June 2020.

The number of POS transactions reached about 212.77 million last week, according to data issued by SAMA.

POS transactions represent consumer expenditures through debit and credit cards at major shopping centers, retail outlets, pharmacies, and others.

During the week, all sectors saw an increase in POS except for the education sector, which declined by 2% week-on-week (WoW).

The telecommunications sector led gainers by 58%, followed by the food and beverage (F&B) sector (52%), and clothing and footwear (48%).

Consumer spending was focused on the F&B sector, totaling SAR 2.72 billion during the week. The restaurants and cafes sector trailed with total POS transactions worth SAR 2.24 billion, as follows:

Riyadh led in terms of POS value during the week with approximately SAR 5.24 billion, representing 32.3% of the total. Jeddah came in second with SAR 2.3 billion, as follows:
