US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order early Friday modifying the reciprocal tariff rates imposed on dozens of countries.
In a statement, the White House said that all goods believed to have been rerouted to avoid applicable tariffs will now be subject to an additional 40% tariff.
The decision affects dozens of countries, including some that have trade agreements with the US, such as Japan, the European Union, and the UK.
Among those countries, Syria faces the highest rate of 41%. Exports from Laos and Myanmar to the US will also be subject to a 40% tariff.
Tariffs of 39% and 30% will be imposed on Switzerland and South Africa, respectively.
For Asian countries that have not reached trade agreements with the US, the latest executive order introduced certain concessions by lowering tariff rates.
Tariffs on imports from Thailand will be reduced to 19% from 36%, and on Malaysian goods to 19% from 24%.
The order also stated that countries not listed will face an additional 10% tariff. Meanwhile, trade partners that have reached—or are close to reaching—trade and security agreements with the US will be subject to the adjusted tariffs until those agreements are finalized.
In a separate order, Trump raised tariffs on Canadian exports to 35% from 25%, effective immediately, except for goods covered under the free trade agreement. This followed an earlier order that raised tariffs on Brazilian exports to 50% from 10%.
According to Bloomberg Economics calculations, Trump’s latest measures raise the average US tariff rate to 15.2% from 13.3%, significantly higher than the 2.3% average in 2024 before he took office.
Overall, the tariff adjustment order imposes higher tariffs on imports from nearly 40 countries, now subject to a 15% rate, and levies even steeper tariffs on products from around 12 economies.
