France-based energy services firm Technip on Monday said it was awarded an engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) that is set to expand its Jebel Ali refinery by 50 percent.
The expansion project is estimated at about $1 billion and the expected date for commercial production is fourth quarter of 2019, Technip said.
The project is expected to increase the refining capacity of the Jebel Ali facility by 70,000 barrels per day after completion.
"The main package of the project will add a new condensate processing train to the existing facility, expanding its daily capacity to 210,000 barrels, up from its existing current 140,000 barrels per day," the company said in a statement.
The following two packages of the project will include the construction of storage tanks and a 31,000 square foot warehouse. Suitable contractors are being shortlisted ahead of the tendering process for both packages, the statement added.
Technip was contractor on the Jebel Ali refinery from 1997 to 1999. It said that the group’s operating center in Rome, Italy, will manage the new project.
