King Abdullah Port will raise its annual throughput to 4 million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) in 2017 when operations begin at the two new berths that are nearing completion, Abdullah Hameedadin, managing director of the Ports Development Co., the owner and developer of King Abdullah Port, said in a statement.
The port’s annual throughput had risen to 1.4 million TEU by the end of 2016, an 8 percent year-on-year increase. It received 729 vessels last year compared to 637 vessels in 2015, he added.
In 2015, King Abdullah Port signed an agreement with Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) group to operate the first phase of the roll-on/roll-off hub (RO/RO) terminals at the port.
Hameedadin had said in September, 2016 that the total investments in King Abdullah Port would exceed SAR 10 billion by year-end.
