ACWA Power to develop solar project in Jordan

16/01/2017 Argaam

Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power will develop, own and operate a new 61.3 megawatt peak (MWp) photovoltaic project in Risha, a province in Eastern Jordan, the firm said in a statement on Monday.

ACWA Power will also finance and construct the project, the cost of which was not provided. The project is expected to be complete by the first quarter of 2019.

The Riyadh-based firm submitted a record-low tariff of JOD 0.42 per kWh for the project, the statement said.

The new photovoltaic facility is part of Jordan’s efforts to meet growing energy needs, as the country’s demand for electricity rises at 7 percent per year.

The kingdom has roughly 1,000 MW of solar and wind projects underway, with a goal of raising the share of renewable energy to 15 percent of the energy mix by 2020.

ACWA Power currently operates in 11 countries across the Middle East and North Africa, Turkey, Southern Africa and South East Asia regions.

Once operational, the Risha facility will be the eighth power plant secured and developed by ACWA Power in Jordan.
