Saudi Arabia’s Haramain high-speed rail project started a trial run today with the attendance of Nabeel Al-Amoudi, Minister of Transport, and Rumaih Al Rumaih, chief executive of the Saudi Railway Co. (SAR).
The new rail ran from Madinah to Makkah at a speed exceeding 300 kilometers per hour, state news agency SPA reported.
The trial run will extend for several months, Al Rumaih tsaid, adding that passengers will be able to try the new rail services during the weekend.
The ticket price has not been defined yet, he added, noting, however, that prices will be affordable in line with the available services.
The consortium undertaking the railroad construction will operate and maintain the railway for a 12-year period, he noted.
The project’s official launch is scheduled for the first half of 2018.
The 450-km long railway will link the Kingdom’s holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, passing through Jeddah and Rabigh, and can carry 9,000 passengers per hour.
