Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power launched Salalah 2 IPP plant in Oman at a total investment cost of SAR 1.7 billion ($465 million), the company said in a statement on Thursday.
The new facility, which operates with a total capacity of 445 megawatt (MW), adds to the capacity of the existing 273 MW plant in Raysut.
The plant was completed ahead of schedule with 6.4 million working hours and zero accidents or injuries. It comprises four gas turbines with four heat recovery steam generators and two steam turbines.
Owned by the Dhofar Generating Co., the project was developed by a consortium of Mitsui, ACWA Power and Dhofar International Development and Investment Holding Company.
“The project has enhanced the efficiency of Oman’s power grid, and 23 per cent of the project budget was allocated to local companies and contractors, contributing significantly to the local value chain. The project’s completion was achieved with the support of engineers and technicians from Oman,” Thamer Al Sharhan, Managing Director at ACWA Power, said.
The project will help attract more investments to the region, Naef bin Mohammad Al Awaed, chief executive of Dhofar Generating, said.
