Saudi Arabia, UAE pledge $1 bln to humanitarian aid in Yemen

28/03/2018 Argaam

Saudi Arabia and the UAE pledged $1 billion package in support of the United Nations (UN) humanitarian response plan for Yemen, Saudi Press Agency reported today.

Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, who is currently in official visit to the US, handed over the pledge to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The agreement includes $1 billion from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, including $930 million to UN-related organizations and $70 million for the rehabilitation of Yemeni ports and roads.

Prince Mohammed said Saudi Arabia is keen on UN principles, which meant “not interfering in the affairs of other countries,” an apparent reference to Iran’s support for the Houthis.

Guterres expressed his appreciation for the Kingdom’s humanitarian contributions worldwide, and to the Yemeni people.
