Pensioners in Saudi Arabia rose 7% in 2017

Saudi Arabia's Public Pension Agency (PPA) said in its annual report the total count of retirees increased by 53,900 persons, or 7 percent year-on-year (YoY) to 835,700 in 2017.

The total alive pensioners rose by 8 percent YoY to 614,900 last year. Deceased pensioners increased by 4 percent YoY to 220,900 in the same period.

Total payouts – regular and one-time payments – stood at SAR 694.9 billion at the end of 2017. Total disbursements grew by 3 percent YoY to SAR 67.8 billion in 2017.

Male pensioners accounted for 89 percent of total beneficiaries in 2017, reaching 746,600 – a YoY rise of 6 percent.

Female pensioners jumped 16 percent YoY to 89,100, representing 11 percent of total beneficiaries.

Riyadh had the largest number of pensioners in 2017 with 215,300, or 26 percent of total pensioners across the Kingdom. Makkah came second with 197,000 pensioners, or 24 percent of total beneficiaries.

The age group between 50 and 54 years represented 25 percent of total pensioners. Pensioners between 45 and 49 years made up for 20 percent of total beneficiaries, with the 60-64 age group accounting for 19 percent.

The two age groups between 50 and 59 years witnessed the biggest increase in the number of pensioners at 10 percent. Pensioners between 60 and 64 years followed with a rise of 7 percent, the report added.
