General Electric has won a $700 million contract to deliver turbine and generator units for the El Dabaa power plant, Egypt’s first nuclear project.
The equipment will be delivered through AAEM, its joint venture with Atomenergomash, GE Power said in a statement on Tuesday.
GE will supply four turbine units for the 4.8 gigawatt facility.
The company will deliver one turbine each year from 2023 until 2026, and the units will begin operating at the rate of one per year from 2026 until 2029, Bloomberg reported, citing Michael Keroulle, chief commercial officer for GE’s Steam Power business.
Egypt’s electricity demand in Egypt has increased rapidly on account of growing population and increasing industrial activity.
According to estimates, an additional 1.5GW of new capacity will be needed each year to meet demand, which is an increase of 6 percent year-on-year until 2022.
GE Power recently completed building and connecting the Badr substation in Egypt to the national grid. The substation will dispatch 1.5 GW of electricity and play a strategic role in the upcoming Egypt-Saudi Arabia Interconnection, linking the national grids of both countries with a 1,300-kilometer transmission line.
