Oil prices plunged more than 3 percent on Monday after US President Donald Trump urged OPEC to control rising oil prices.

“Oil prices getting too high. OPEC, please relax and take it easy. World cannot take a price hike - fragile!” Trump said in a tweet on Monday.

International benchmark Brent crude futures closed $2.36 (- 3.5 percent) on $64.76 a barrel on Monday after hitting $67.73 a barrel last Friday, the highest since mid-November.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell $1.78 (- 3.1 percent) at $55.48 a barrel after reaching a three-month high of $57.81 a barrel last Friday.

However, Brent and WTI were trading flat on Tuesday morning, at $64.71 and $55.27 a barrel.

Crude prices have surged more than 25 percent this year following OPEC+ decided to cut production,  US-China expected to resolve trade dispute and Washington's proposed "tougher" oil sanctions on Venezuela.

Trump has taken on the OPEC for quite some time, tweeting over higher oil prices, asking the oil group to increase production to control scaling prices.
