25/03/2019 Press Release

School visits are planned to take place across Dubai from 24th till 27th March 2019

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 25 March 2019 – The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) has kickstarted a roadshow sponsored by SABIC as part of the 7th edition of its Waste Free Environment (WFE) campaign held across a number of schools in Dubai this week between 24th and 27th March 2019.

As many as 630 students aged between 7-12 will participate in the program starting from Our Own Highschool, Al Warqa’a on 24th March, Gems Wellington Academy on 26th March, and Al Mawakeb Al Khawaneej School on 27th March, with a planned visit to Next Generation School to be held in April. The program is specially designed to raise awareness about the 4Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover and educate the youngest members of our society about plastics sustainability.

All planned activities are aimed at providing an edutainment experience for the students through expert presentations, a recycling competition, interactive quizzes and special prizes for the winners. Guest speakers from the roadshow’s main sponsor, SABIC, and valued partners, LyondellBasell and Dow Chemicals, will deliver presentations as part of the program on the benefits of plastics, their contribution to our daily lives, the importance of recycling and responsible plastic waste management, among other topics.

Students will also have the chance to enjoy a special science show and participate in a recycling competition organized with the support of Bee’ah, the official recycling partner of Waste Free Environment.

Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA, commented, “I would like to thank SABIC for their support sponsoring this important awareness-building roadshow, aimed at changing perceptions about the value of plastic and the need for embedding the 4Rs into our daily habits starting from the youngest members of our society to the wider communities in the Arabian Gulf region and the globe.”

“Waste Free Environment aims to educate the public that plastic is a highly sustainable material that can be maintained at its highest value for as long as possible, never leaking into natural streams or being incarcerated in landfill. Making this vision a reality will require the collective actions of government, industry and society and enacting a behavioral change is one small but crucially important step to address this challenge. Through this campaign, we at GPCA, with the support of our partners and members, call on everyone to be part of the change and help us build a more sustainable future for our planet,” he concluded.
