Nigerian, South Korean in final race to become WTO chief

Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee are through to the final round of selection to become the next director-general of the World Trade Organization.

The second phase, which started on Sept. 24, ended on Oct. 6 during which five candidates competed, including Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad Al-Tuwaijri.

A woman will lead the Geneva-based organization for the first time since its establishment in 1995, with the new director-general expected to be chosen by early November.

The WTO monitors the liberalization of international trade, regulate trade between member states, and oversee disputes’ settlement between members.
