US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to impose an additional 40% tariff on Brazil, bringing the total levy on the Latin American country to 50%, the White House announced on July 30.
In a statement, the White House said the decision is due to Brazil pursuing policies that the Trump administration opposes.
The move follows Trump’s warning earlier this month to impose a 50% tariff on imports from Brazil.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva denounced Trump's threat at the time, describing it as "unacceptable blackmail."
