US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social, that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in mid-August in Alaska, adding that the two parties will provide more details later.
Late Friday, Trump said he would meet the Russian president “very soon” to discuss the war in Ukraine, noting that he would announce the meeting’s location later.
On the sidelines of a trilateral summit with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Trump said: “The meeting could have happened sooner, but apparently there are security arrangements that need to be made.”
This would be the first US-Russia summit since 2021, when then-President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.
Trump had earlier pledged to impose “secondary tariffs” of 100% on Russia’s trade partners if Moscow did not halt the war in Ukraine, initially setting a 50-day deadline ending in early September, which was later shortened.
