Egypt completes 95% of the electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia.
Egypt completed 95% of the electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, ahead of operating the first phase by the end of this year or early 2026, Asharq News reported, citing an Egyptian government official.
The official said work included building 862 towers and laying cables and transmission lines across Egyptian territory. He added that the total length of extra-high-voltage cables and power lines implemented in Egypt reached about 330 kilometers, all of which have been completed, and that contractors are close to finishing testing.
According to data available with Argaam, the project aims to connect the electricity grids of Egypt and Saudi Arabia through a 1,300-kilometer overhead line, including 450 kilometers in Egypt, a 20-kilometer subsea cable under the Gulf of Aqaba, and 830 kilometers in Saudi Arabia.
The interconnection will allow electricity exchange between the two grids at an initial capacity of 1,500 megawatts, rising to 3,000 megawatts upon completion.
The project leverages the difference in peak demand times, which occur during the day in Saudi Arabia and at night in Egypt.
