The European Council approved a plan by the EU member states to phase out Russian gas imports, targeting a full ban by the end of 2027. The move aims to end decades of reliance on Russian energy.
The decision came during a meeting of the EU energy ministers in Luxembourg on Oct. 20. The leaders backed the European Commission’s proposal to end all dependence on Russian gas starting January 2028, AFP reported.
The plan now awaits formal approval from the European Parliament before taking effect, becoming part of the bloc’s unified energy policy more than three years into the Russia-Ukraine war.
