US President Donald Trump said early today, Jan. 23, that an armada is heading toward Iran, while stressing that it may not ultimately be used against Tehran. He added that the US is closely monitoring developments in the country.
He hoped not to use it, as he renewed warnings to Tehran against killing protesters or restarting its nuclear program.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he would soon announce his nominee for Chair of the Federal Reserve, noting that he has a candidate in mind whom he considers highly competent, widely respected, and well known, adding that he believes the nominee will perform an excellent job.
On energy, Trump said US companies will soon begin oil exploration in Venezuela, although he acknowledged that companies have raised concerns about the feasibility of a rapid return to the country.
Turning to China, Trump said he plans to visit China in April, while the Chinese president is expected to visit the United States in late 2026. He added that he is looking forward to meeting President Xi, noting that the two have long maintained an excellent relationship. Trump said ties between the world’s two largest economies were strained during the COVID-19 pandemic, but have improved markedly since then.
Trump also said China is currently purchasing large quantities of US soybeans, describing this as beneficial for American farmers.
On the Russia–Ukraine war, Trump said that both the Russian and Ukrainian presidents have expressed a desire to end the conflict.
