Trump pressures Fed’s Powell to cut rates immediately
US President Donald Trump sharply criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, describing him as “too late” and urging him to cut interest rates immediately rather than wait for the Fed’s meeting next week.
In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump wrote: "Where is the Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome "Too Late" Powell, today? He should be dropping Interest Rates, IMMEDIATELY, not waiting for the next meeting! President DONALD J. TRUMP"
Trump’s call comes as the US economy faces inflationary pressures linked to the Middle East war, after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to meet on March 17–18 to decide on interest rates, amid diminishing expectations of a rate cut by the Fed.
