Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical (PrefChem), equally owned by Saudi Aramco and Petronas, has restarted after a more than two-year closure, Reuters reported, citing a source.

The complex in Pengerang, Johor, is resuming operations when refining margins in Asia are at record levels, buoyed by a fuel demand recovery as more economies across Asia, except for China, ease COVID-19 restrictions.

According to data available with Argaam, PrefChem houses a 300,000 barrel-per-day refinery and 1.2 million-ton-per-year steam cracker.

In April 2019, the refinery’s atmospheric residue atmo desulphurisation unit was damaged by a fire.
