Haitham Al-Ghais of Kuwait assumed his position as OPEC Secretary-General following Mohammad Barkindo’s death on July 5.

 

Al-Ghais, voted in during a special OPEC meeting in January, was set to take office in August.

 

Barkindo took over as Secretary-General of OPEC in 2016 and stayed in office for two terms.

 

Al-Ghais, a former OPEC official, has worked in the Kuwait Petroleum Corp. (KPC) since 1993.

 

Mohammad Barkindo, OPEC Secretary-General, was announced dead earlier today, according to Argaam.
