Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Sport plans to issue tenders for sports stadium expansion and construction, part of a SAR 10.1 billion capital projects program, MEED reported, citing sources in the know.

“The prequalification process has been completed and the tender for the stadiums is expected to be issued in a week or two,” the sources confirmed.

In July 2023, the Ministry of Sports invited contracting companies to file for main construction contracts' prequalification. These projects are poised for completion before the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The largest of these projects entails the construction of a new stadium in northern Riyadh and the upgrade of five existing football stadiums.

These renovations involve expanding the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh to a capacity of 92,000 seats, the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh to 45,000 seats, the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam to 30,000 seats, and the Prince Saud bin Jalawi Stadium in Al Khobar to 45,000 seats. This is in addition to building a new sustainable stadium in northern Riyadh with a capacity of 45,000 seats.

The other main element of the ministry’s projects program covers the construction of 30 stadiums and training facilities in proximity to the stadiums that will be used for the 2027 Asian Cup.

Construction is set to start in July, slated for completion in December 2025.
