The US bond market was closed today, Tuesday, for the Veteran’s Day holiday, while stock trading continued as normal in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq.
Originally, this holiday was called Armistice Day because it commemorates the date and time — November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. — when the armistice that ended World War I was signed.
Veterans Day is now a federal holiday that honors all military veterans. It is also a day off for many US institutions, including the bond market, most banks, banking services, the Federal Reserve, and non-essential government agencies.
For many years, the NYSE closed on Veterans Day, but that changed in 1954, when the exchange chose to remain open. In recent years, both the NYSE and Nasdaq have marked the day with a moment of silence before the opening bell.
