The number of Americans filing new applications for jobless benefits dropped to a one-month low in the week ended Dec. 27, demonstrating the persistent resilience of the labor market.
Data released by the US Department of Labor revealed that initial jobless claims fell on a weekly basis by 16,000 to 199,000 applications for the week.
This came against expectations for an increase in applications to 220,000, compared to last week’s adjusted upward average of 215,000.
The report also indicated that the less volatile four-week moving average also added 1,750 to 218,750, versus the previous week's revised average.
