Financial markets around the world are closed for the New Year holiday
Major financial markets around the world are closed on Thursday to mark the start of the 2026 New Year, including those in the United States and Canada, as well as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Markets are also shut in China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
The closures follow an early close for European markets on Wednesday. Most markets, including Wall Street, are set to resume normal trading on Friday.
By the close of Wednesday’s session, the S&P 500 had posted annual gains of about 16.4% for 2025, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 20.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 12.45% over the year.
The MSCI All Country World Index, which tracks large- and mid-cap stocks across developed and emerging markets, climbed more than 20% in 2025, marking a third consecutive year in which global equities posted gains exceeding 10%.
China’s Shanghai Composite Index rose 18.4%, delivering its best annual performance since 2019. Europe’s STOXX 600 index also recorded its strongest annual showing since 2021, rising 16.7% over the year.
