US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump said on Jan. 3 that the United States carried out a military strike on Venezuela and arrested President Nicolás Maduro, who was airlifted out of the country.
The US has not undertaken such a direct intervention in Latin America since the 1989 invasion of Panama to oust military leader Manuel Noriega.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote the US successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its president. Maduro and his wife were arrested and airlifted out of the country.
No confirmation has yet been issued by the Venezuelan government.
The US has accused Maduro of running a “narco-state” and rigging elections.
Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chávez in 2013, has accused Washington of seeking to take control of Venezuela’s oil reserves, the largest in the world.
