Saudi Arabian Oil Co. (Saudi Aramco) launched its largest offshore oil platform TB-9 at the King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam on Thursday, state-owned Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The new oil rig, which is fixed in Al-Murjan oilfield, will receive the output of eight offshore oil platforms, which then will be transferred to laboratory No. 2 for gas separation.

The launch of the new 3,500 ton rig comes as part of the oil producer’s strategy to develop its offshore oil resources. The rig will also help in boosting local manufacturing capacities, Ahmad Al Sa'adi, senior vice president of Technical Services at Aramco, said.

The TB-9 rig project had been earlier awarded to Saudi-based Saipem and Star consortium.
