×POS weekly transactions hit SAR 8.1 bln: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 8.07 billion in the week ending July 16, from SAR 12.09 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that 123 million transactions were processed in the week.
POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATM and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Most sectors witnessed a decrease in POS during the past week, except for the hotel sector, which rose by 7%.
The education sector reported the lowest POS transactions, down 93%. It was followed by clothing and footwear sector with 61%, and telecommunications sector with 48%.
Consumer spending focused on restaurants and cafes sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.49 billion, representing nearly 18.5% of total sales, followed by the food and beverages sector with SAR 1.27 billion, or 15.7% of total sales.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.13 billion, representing 26% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.26 billion.
