The Chinese Ministry of Finance announced today, April 4, that it will impose a 34% tariff on all imports from the US starting April 10.
According to a statement quoted by Xinhua, the ministry urged the United States to immediately cancel its unilateral tariff measures and resolve trade disputes through consultation based on equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit.
Chinese authorities also stated that they will suspend the import of poultry products from two American companies.
This move comes as a countermeasure following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of an additional 34% tariff on China in the latest round of the trade war.
The Chinese ministry criticized Washington's decision to impose the additional reciprocal tariffs on China, which bring the total tariffs imposed on the country to 54%, describing it as a violation of international trade rules and a serious undermining of Chinese interests.
Trade tensions between Washington and Beijing have been escalating since Trump’s return to the White House, and Trump has yet to speak with his Chinese counterpart more than two months after taking office.
