S&P 500, Dow Jones close lower; Nasdaq advances
Most US stock indices declined at the close of trading on Wednesday, following the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates unchanged. Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated that policymakers are not yet ready to resume easing borrowing costs, as the central bank assesses the potential impact of tariffs on inflation.

At the close of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.38%, or 171 points, to 44,461 points.
The broader S&P 500 Index declined by 0.12%, or 7 points, to 6,362 points, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose by 0.15%, or 31 points, to 21,129 points.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index held steady at 550 points, with mixed performance across major sectors and exchanges.
France’s CAC 40 remained unchanged at 7,861 points, as did the UK’s FTSE 100 at 9,136 points, while Germany’s DAX gained 0.20% to reach 24,262 points.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Index was flat at 40,654 points, whereas the broader TOPIX Index rose by 0.40% to 2,920 points.

Brent crude futures for September delivery — which expire on Thursday — rose by 1%, or 73 cents, to settle at $73.24 per barrel.
US. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for September delivery increased by 1.14%, or 79 cents, to $70 per barrel.
December gold futures, the most active, fell by 0.80%, or $28.40, to settle at $3,352.80 per ounce.
The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged in the range of 4.25% to 4.50% at the conclusion of its two-day policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. Fed Chair Jerome Powell noted a slowdown in economic growth during the first half of the year.
However, Powell emphasized that the Federal Open Market Committee has not yet decided on September meeting, adding that a moderately restrictive monetary policy stance remains appropriate given the strength of the economy.
Official data released today showed that the world’s largest economy grew by 3% year-on-year (YoY) in Q2 2025, following a 0.50% contraction in Q1 2025 — outperforming expectations for 2.4% growth.
