Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Al-Khorayef said the local steel market has been facing two types of shortages — one in total quantity and another, more importantly, in the quality of available products.

In response to an Argaam question regarding the study on optimal options to address the domestic market shortage, during the 3rd Saudi International Iron and Steel Conference 2025, the minister explained that most local manufacturers had been focusing on modern industries related to rebar production.

While this industry is vital and supported by the housing, megaproject, and construction sectors, there was also a need to address shortages in steel types based on sheets, which were mostly imported.

He noted that some plants have already shifted production to seize this opportunity, highlighting that one of the ministry’s key roles is to clarify the market size, demand, and existing gaps.

The minister expressed satisfaction that the private sector has taken the initiative and moved quickly to fill these gaps.
