Marafiq, Miahona-led consortium has been selected as the developer for the Arana Independent Sewage Treatment Plant in Makkah
The Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (MARAFIQ) and Miahona Co. said their consortium has been selected on Dec. 4 to develop the Arana Independent Sewage Treatment Plant (ISTP) in Makkah Province. The project will be implemented under a 25-year Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) agreement.
The consortium was selected by Saudi Water Partnership Co. (SWPC).
The total contract value, excluding potential expansion, is estimated at more than SAR 3 billion. The consortium, which will work to finalize commercial and financial close, includes MARAFIQ as the technical partner with a 35% stake, alongside Miahona and Buhur for Investment Co.
The project covers the development of a new sewage treatment plant with a daily capacity of up to 250,000 cubic meters, including all stages of design, financing, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, testing, operation, maintenance, and eventual transfer of ownership. The scope includes facilities for water treatment, treated sewage effluent (TSE) processing, and outfall delivery.
The project also involves developing auxiliary infrastructure and connections, including linking to the Arana Plant TSE Re-use Delivery Point, connecting to the existing electrical substation, and building sludge treatment infrastructure for collection, transport, and delivery for beneficial use.
MARAFIQ said the plant could be expanded to a daily capacity of 500,000 cubic meters at the request of SWPC. At full capacity, Arana ISTP is expected to become one of the Kingdom’s largest and most advanced sewage treatment facilities, deploying state-of-the-art technology to support the circular economy and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 sustainability and environmental goals.
