Saudi Arabia approves General Education Law by royal decree

Saudi Arabia issued a royal decree today, July 24, approving the General Education Law, aimed at strengthening the governance framework for general education, providing the enablers needed to achieve its objectives, improving the quality of the learning environment and educational outcomes, and regulating the role of the private and non-profit sectors in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

According to the state-owned SPA, the law enhances governance by defining the roles of the Ministry of Education, the General Education Affairs Council and other relevant entities, supporting the alignment of education policies, plans and programs, improving decision-making efficiency, and enabling the ministry to strengthen its regulatory, monitoring and supervisory functions across the general education sector.

The law also supports investment in education by regulating private and non-profit sector participation in providing educational services, enhancing the investment climate and partnerships under a clear regulatory framework to improve service quality, expand educational options, and ensure the sustainable development of public and private educational institutions.

In addition, the law underscores the protection of human rights in education, safeguards the rights of students and teachers, and promotes a safe and supportive learning environment to improve the quality of education and students' learning experience. It also reinforces the role of families in supporting the educational journey.
