Saudi banks have compensated customers who have been impacted by a recent ATM data breach in Riyadh, Talaat Hafez, secretary-general of the Media and Banking Awareness Committee of Saudi Banks told Al Watan newspaper.
A foreign gang was said to have used sophisticated card readers and cameras to access the credit card details of users at ATMs to steal limited amounts of money.
The gang members had been caught within 72 hours after the incident last week, due to coordinated efforts between the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) and local authorities, according to media reports.
SAMA’s deputy governor Abdul Aziz Al-Furaih told Arab News that only a few ATMs had been affected in the Saudi capital. He added that all machines in the kingdom are equipped with security technology.
He urged banks to strengthen their monitoring systems and to educate their customers on fraud protection.
