Saudi Arabia to spend SAR 9 bln on sustainable agriculture

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has issued a royal decree approving a sustainable rural agricultural development program, according to a statement on the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

 

The Kingdom has allocated a total of SAR 7.35 billion for the program over seven years, in addition to a capital cost of SAR 1.5 billion, and SAR 250 million a year to develop the palm and date sector, said Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture.

 

The program will cover several sectors such as small livestock farms, fisheries, honey and bees, flowers, Arabic coffee and rainfed crops.

 

The step comes as part of the Kingdom’s strategy to optimize its resources, improve the income of small farmers, provide jobs, and achieve food security and balanced development, Al-Fadhli added.
