Titanium Sponge JV
Overview
The joint venture (Advanced Metal Industries and Toho Titanium Co.) aims at establishing a 15.6k tpa titanium sponge production facility. The new facility will be built adjacent to Cristal’s existing titanium dioxide plant in Yanbu Industrial City. Cristal’s Titanium Dioxide plant will supply the new production plant with titanium tetrachloride, the main feedstock for producing titanium sponge, while Toho will provide the project with needed production technology.
Titanium Sponge is used in the production of titanium metal alloys, which is used in many industries such as chemical, mineralogical and electronic.

- The National Industrialization Company (Tasnee) owns an indirect equity stake of 58% in the project by virtue of Tasnee's 79% equity stake in National Titanium Dioxide Company (Cristal).

The mechanical works of the project were completed by H1 2017. Commercial operations were shifted to H2 2019 (instead of H1 2019), due to delayed construction of the raw material (titanium tetrachloride) production unit.

The project’s estimated total investment is expected to increase by SAR 225 mln. Estimated total investment was SAR 1.65 bln ($440 miln).

Trial operation started on 18 September 2019, while commercial operation is marked for Q4 of the same year.
