The smart metering project includes manufacturing and installing 10 million smart meters for all consumers across Saudi Arabia, replacing circuit breakers with smart ones, upgrading the telecommunication infrastructure, the data management systems, and the smart meter operation center, in addition to the operation and maintenance services. The SAR 9.56 billion project will be implemented over three phases. Phase one includes installing 5.3 million meters; in phase two, they will reach to 5 million meters, and they will be brought online through a dedicated network system, and in phase three, eight million meters will be installed and will be connected to billing systems.
In Q2 2018, the company announced the awarding of installing smart meters to a national company and said that 2.5 million meters will be installed during the coming three years.
The company said that it invited 8-10 companies, including telecommunication companies, to invest in the smart metering project.
The company announced that it awarded Etihad Etisalat Co. (Mobily) and Al- Fanar Construction consortium to implement the project in Central and Eastern operating areas, and Branch of China Electric Power Equipment and
Techn. (SGCC) to implement the project in Western and Southern operating areas.
The company said installing the smart meters will be implemented over three phases and will start in February 2020. The first phase, ending in April 2020, will see installing of 5.3 million meters. The second phase will end in September 2020. The third phase, ending in December 2020, will see installing of 8 million meters, to reach to 10 million meters by the end of March 2021.
In Q1 2020, The company announced the launch of the first phase of the project.
