Dow Jones gains over 1,000 points, ends 4-session losing streak
US stocks ended higher on Tuesday, April 22, as investor sentiment was buoyed by easing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing following positive remarks from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 2.66%, or 1016 points, to 39,186 points, ending a 4-session losing streak.
Similarly, S&P 500 Index added 2.51% to 5,287 points. Nasdaq Composite rose 2.71%, to 16,300 points.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that the trade standoff with China "cannot continue," expressing optimism that tensions will ease soon.
Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.25% to 507.7 points, following ECB President Christine Lagarde’s encouraging comments that the inflation would reach its target range.
FTSE index inched up 0.65% to 8,328 points. France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.55% to finish at 7,326 points. Germany’s DAX index also edged up 0.4% to 21,293 points.
In Japan, Nikkei 225 fell 0.15% to 34,220 points. Meanwhile, TOPIX increased 0.15% to 2,532 points.
Brent crude futures for June delivery soared 1.80%, or $1.18, to $67.44 a barrel.
Also, US WTI crude futures for June delivery added 2% to $63.47 a barrel.
As for gold, June futures contracts lost 0.17% to $3,419.40 per ounce, pressured by improved sentiment among risk asset investors and profit-taking activity.
