Dow Jones closes at record high, Nasdaq gains 3%
US stocks advanced at the close of trading on Monday, supported by broad-based optimism after US President Donald Trump confirmed the signing of an agreement to end the war with Iran, alongside continued strong momentum in the technology sector, led by gains in SpaceX shares.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 468 points, or 0.92%, to close at 51,671, hitting an all-time high.
The S&P 500 gained 122 points, or 1.65%, to end at 7,554, while the Nasdaq Composite surged 795 points, or 3%, to 26,683.
In Europe, the STOXX 600 index rose 0.19% to 634 points, after approaching 641.66 points during the session.
Britain's FTSE 100 added 0.39% to 10,430 points. Germany's DAX advanced 1% to 24,894 points, and France's CAC 40 gained 0.40% to 8,384 points.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 increased 5% to 69,317, breaking above the 69,000-point mark for the first time ever, while the broader Topix index rose 3% to 3,999 points.
Brent crude futures for August delivery fell $4.16, or 4.76%, to settle at $83.17 a barrel.
US West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery declined $4.13, or 4.87%, to $80.75 a barrel.
Gold futures for August delivery rose $112.80, or 2.66%, to settle at $4,351.60 an ounce, extending gains for the second consecutive session.
What moved markets?
Markets reacted positively to the announcement of a signed agreement between the US and Iran, which boosted risk appetite and lifted equities. The development also coincided with a decline in oil prices and easing inflation expectations, reducing the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this year.
