Dow ends higher; Nasdaq sheds over 1%
US stocks ended lower on Monday as selling pressure in technology shares weighed on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, while gains in industrial and financial stocks helped support the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.29%, or 148 points, to close at 51,712.
The S&P 500 fell 0.37%, or 27 points, to 7,472, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.33%, or 351 points, to 26,166.
In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 index gained 0.58% to close at 639 points, supported by advances in banking and travel stocks.
Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.72% to 10,437, while Germany’s DAX gained 0.62% to 25,139. France’s CAC 40, however, slipped 0.25% to 8,400.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 surged 1.55% to 72,353, closing above the 72,000 level for the first time on record. The broader Topix index advanced 1.25% to 4,095.
In commodities, Brent crude futures for August delivery fell 3.31%, or $2.67, to settle at $77.90 a barrel.
US West Texas Intermediate crude futures for July delivery declined 2.32%, or $1.78, to $74.82 a barrel.
Gold futures for August delivery fell 1%, or $43.20, to settle at $4,202.70 an ounce.
Market Movers
Selling in technology stocks pushed Wall Street into negative territory, although losses were tempered by lower oil prices amid signs of easing tensions between the United States and Iran. Investors are also awaiting inflation data later this week for further clues on the outlook for interest rates.
