US stocks finish mixed; weekly gains extend
US stock indexes ended Thursday's session mixed as pressure on semiconductor stocks persisted. However, Wall Street posted weekly gains amid easing geopolitical tensions and an improving monetary policy outlook, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing at a record high.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.14%, or 594 points, to 52,900, marking a record closing high and posting a weekly gain of 1.97%.
The broader S&P 500 index was little changed at 7,483, preserving gains of 1.75% during the shortened trading week.
Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.80%, or 207 points, to 25,832, trimming its weekly advance to 2.11%.
In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 index climbed 1.41% to 648, closing at an all-time high.
The UK's FTSE 100 gained 1.67% to 10,652, Germany's DAX advanced 2.16% to 25,580, and France's CAC 40 rose 1.65% to 8,474.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 declined 2.47% to 68,733, while the broader TOPIX edged up about 0.10% to 4,014.
In the oil market, September Brent crude futures rose 0.32%, or 23 cents, to settle at $71.80 a barrel.
US WTI crude futures for August delivery gained 0.16%, or 11 cents, to $68.69 a barrel, although they posted a weekly decline of 0.78%.
Gold futures for August delivery climbed 1%, or $43.30, to $4,125.70 per ounce, leaving the precious metal with a weekly gain of 0.72%.
Wall Street's mixed performance followed weaker-than-expected employment data, which reduced expectations of further monetary tightening this year. Pressure on semiconductor stocks also persisted as investors reassessed artificial intelligence bets amid concerns over slowing demand for computing infrastructure.
