US stocks end lower as Dow drops 460 pts
US stocks closed lower on Thursday as investors monitored developments in negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while assessing a fresh wave of corporate earnings.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.85%, or 464 points, to 53,885.
The broader S&P 500 declined 0.18%, or 13 points, to 7,709, while the Nasdaq Composite was little changed at 26,348.
Across the Atlantic, the pan-European STOXX Europe 600 Index rose 0.16% to 658, marking a fresh record closing high.
The UK's FTSE 100 slipped 0.19% to 10,867, Germany's DAX was unchanged at 26,140, while France's CAC 40 gained 0.35% to 8,699.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.95% to 65,683, while the broader Topix Index advanced 0.25% to 4,055.
In oil markets, Brent crude futures for October delivery climbed 3.83%, or $3.04, to settle at $82.49 a barrel.
U.S. WTI crude futures for September delivery surged 2.75%, or $2.07, to $77.29 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery edged down 0.13%, or $5.60, to $4,299.60 per ounce.
Investor sentiment remained dominated by anticipation over negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz. This came after an Iranian bill proposing restrictions on the passage of certain vessels renewed concerns over global oil supplies, despite ongoing talks aimed at reopening the strategic shipping route.
