Wall Street closes higher, led by tech stocks
US stocks closed higher on Thursday, supported by improved investor sentiment following Nvidia’s earnings, which renewed confidence in the outlook for the technology sector and the AI boom.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.20%, or 105 points, to 53,569.
The broader S&P 500 gained 0.72%, or 55 points, to 7,730, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.57%, or 411 points, to 26,541.
In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 fell 0.69% to 651, with gains in the technology sector limiting the decline.
The FTSE 100 dropped 0.79% to 10,792, while France’s CAC 40 declined 1.68% to 8,319. Germany’s DAX, meanwhile, rose 0.31% to 26,367.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.20% to 66,131, while the broader TOPIX rose 0.15% to 4,117.
Brent crude futures for October delivery rose 2.12%, or $1.86, to $89.70 a barrel.
US WTI crude futures for October delivery gained 1.58%, or $1.30, to $83.53 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery rose 0.23%, or $10.70, to $4,664 an ounce.
What’s behind the market moves? Nvidia’s results boosted technology and chipmaker stocks, while investors turned their attention to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium the following day.
