US equities end higher, post weekly loss
US stocks rose for a second straight session on Friday as September jobs data tempered bets on monetary tightening, but Wall Street posted a mixed weekly performance as bond yields continued to climb.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.49%, or 250 points, to close at 51,176, but fell 1.26% for the week.
The S&P 500 gained 0.73%, or 56 points, to 7,722, narrowing its weekly loss to 0.27%.
The Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.19%, or 319 points, to 27,190 after hitting an intraday record of 27,353. It gained 0.45% for the week.
In Europe, the STOXX 600 rose 0.75% to 631, trimming its weekly loss to 1.14%.
The UK’s FTSE 100 gained 0.32% to 10,461. Germany’s DAX advanced 1.17% to 25,231 and France’s CAC 40 rose 0.79% to 7,897.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.94% to 68,309, while the broader Topix declined 0.99% to 4,091.
Brent crude futures for December delivery settled 0.06%, or 6 cents, lower at $102.25 a barrel.
US WTI crude futures for November delivery fell 1.90%, or $1.76, to settle at $91.11 a barrel.
Gold futures for December delivery fell 0.95%, or $40, to settle at $4,162.30 an ounce.
Market drivers
Weak jobs data supported US stocks by reinforcing expectations that interest rates would remain unchanged in October. Technology shares led the gains, while lower oil prices lifted sentiment. Rising bond yields, however, capped the advance.
